In ancient Greece the wild boar was widespread throughout the land. Because of their strength, courage and ferocity, the wild boar symbolised a worthy adversary for the hunter and is strongly featured with the heroes of Greek mythology.

In Roman times, the large tusked wild boar (Cinghiale) was found in almost every country of the ancient Roman world and particularly so in Italy.

It is thought that the original boar was carved from marble during the centuries BC by a Greek sculptor. This sculpture was either lost or destroyed.

During the 17th century the Italians made a marble copy 'Cinghiale' which is housed in the Uffuzi Gallery in Florence to this very day.

The boars as seen here are perfect likeness of the 'Uffuzi' Boar, with the hair of the boars coat carved into large waving locks over the neck and shoulders with tighter more crowded waves over the body.
